As some of you may know I have a slight fascination with NASA’s Apollo program. Even thought I was born after the missions to the moon I still have become inspired by the Apollo Program. I had the opportunity to interview Edgar Mitchell who walked on the moon with the Apollo 14 mission. This month I was delighted with a brief encounter with the second moonwalker. My good friend Mike attended a conference for ATM (automated teller machines) this month where the keynote speaker was Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon. Buzz Aldrin started his speech with the comment, “here I am at…

My training for this marathon was not as intensive as the first marathon. I felt like I already had the fitness from the last marathon. I had some challenges outside of running during January and February so I determined that my goal for this marathon was simply to finish. My other big goal for this race was to be in less pain at the end of the race. My main strategy for reducing pain was to run for four minutes and walk for one minute. This would give my legs some rest throughout the race. As I passed the 18 mile marker, I sighed, rolled my eyes and moaned to myself, “I still have 8 more…

About Me My First Marathon Last year, on October 9, 2010, I began my journey to run my first Marathon. That Thursday morning I met Jerry Kephart at 6:00 am at the Bedford Clubhouse and we ran two miles around the neighborhood. A year later on October 30, 2011, at 7:00 am, just before dawn, I stood at Arlington Cemetery overlooking the Potomac River ready to run my first ever marathon. The Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial were brightly lit. Marines were all around making sure that everything was operating smoothly. It was 36 degrees and I decided I would run in just my singlet and running shorts. A number of the other runners were bundled up in snow suits…

October 2011 Focused Information for the Small Business Owner Volume 4, Issue 7 Damon Yudichak Portrait by Charles Gupton In This Issue My First Decision Five Lessons I Learned from Uncle Sam Recipe for Success About Me My First Decision I took a non-traditional path to completing college. I started my college experience right on schedule right after high school. I had always been attracted by my math and science courses and everyone told me that I should become a doctor. I embraced that idea and started my pre-med studies. After the third week of my organic chemistry class I realized that medicine was not going to be my career. Given that I didn’t know what I wanted to continue studying, I decided to put college on hold until I figured out what degree I was going to invest in. In my apartment complex, I made a friend who had just finished a…

As part of the plan to close it, a number of community-oriented developments were included for new uses of the land that was once the dump. A children’s playground was built with a spider web jungle gym. The city also built a mountain bike trail. Part of the trail goes up a steep hill that has become affectionately named “The Hill” in our family. Last year on each of my daughter’s birthdays, I took each one individually for their first trip to the top of The Hill. We chatted and looked at all of the surroundings. We ran around, giggled…

It was my first time attending the event. The Purple Heart is awarded to military personal that are wounded or killed during combat. The event was exceptionally well done. The highlight of the Dinner was the walk of honor where each Purple Heart recipient walked across the stage and was honored for their contribution and sacrifice. This year’s guest speaker was Captain Scotty Smiley, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, a Ranger, and combat-diver qualified infantryman. On April 6, 2005, while serving in Iraq, he lost use of both eyes when a suicide car bomber blew up thirty…

On May 14th I timed myself on a mile. I ran as hard as I could and when I reached the mile mark I was elated at the time on my watch of 5:52. I had run a mile in 5 minutes and 52 seconds. This is the fastest I have run a mile in well over a decade so I was quite pleased. At the beginning of the month I joined the Jeff Galloway Training program which is a team training program to help…

Some of you may be wondering what’s with this goofy name Orange Star? On July 31, 2008, I incorporated my fledgling accounting practice. I had just graduated from business school and was highly ambitious about becoming a successful business owner. Having been in the accounting industry for most of my career, I noticed one thing very similar about many CPA practices. All of the CPA practices were named after the founders of the businesses. I had a little marketing moxie and wanted to…
